If you’re trying to lose weight and are working out for it, then snacking after 7 pm is your biggest nightmare. Why you ask? Well, because it can make you fat!
The truth is that hunger pangs can strike anytime and this one statement has flipped our lives. But not anymore! This myth has been busted as a study says that now you can eat at bedtime without getting fat.
Researchers have found that protein consumption before bed compared to protein consumption during the day does not disturb overnight belly fat metabolism or whole-body fat burn in women are work out.
The findings were published in the journal Nutrition, challenged widespread misconceptions about the relationship between night-time eating, weight gain, and metabolism, especially in women. Happy days!
“For far too long, people have been led to believe that eating before bed causes metabolic disturbances and will make them gain fat,” said study author Michael Ormsbee, an associate professor in the College of Human Sciences and the associate director of the FSU Institute of Sports Sciences & Medicine. He added, “However, the data simply does not support this when the food we choose to eat before bed is protein-based and small in size”.
In this study, Ormsbee and his team used two experimental conditions to investigate fat metabolism in a sample of women weight trainers who follow an active lifestyle.
This is what they have to say: “In women who weight train, there are no differences in overnight local belly fat metabolism or whole-body fat burn whether you eat protein in the form of a protein shake during the day post-workout or at night pre-sleep,” said Allman, now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center.
Basically, if you have an active daily routine where you either go to the gym or do any other physical activity then eating protein before bed won’t give you a fat belly. Eureka!
This study is a sigh of relief for many women who starve themselves to be in shape – and sleep empty stomach every now and then.
Bottom line is, indulge yourself in some sort of physical activity and you don’t have to miss your dinner again.
